The Kings sweep the Clippers, win in overtime

Caronport, SK, February 4, 2023 – In this rematch of last night's 3-2 victory over the Briercrest College Clippers, the Red Deer Polytechnic followed that up with another victory to make it four in a row. This road trip is usually tough on teams especially Red Deer Polytechnic squads as both volleyball teams split their weekend in Caronport with a win and a loss earlier on in the season.

But like last night, the Clippers would open the scoring with a goal on an early powerplay opportunity to give the home team the lead in the first period. Briercrest College was able to crash the net, pick up a rebound off of goaltender Arik Weersink (Business Administration) and wrist it into the back of the net.

The pressure around the Kings net continued as Weersink gave off another rebound right onto the stick of his opponent, who passed it to his teammate and the Clippers forward would one-time it into an open net.

The Kings got back into the game with a powerplay goal of their own. Defense Tanner Sklaruk (Open Studies) fired a soft wrist shot on net, which was tipped in front and past the Clippers goaltender by forward Deegan Mofford (Open Studies). The second assist was awarded to forward Erik Miller (Business Administration).

At the end of the first, the Clippers outshot the Kings 15-13.

It would not take long for the polytechnic to tie it up at two as defenseman Parker Gavlas (Business Certificate) walked in from the blue line into the slot and fired a no-doubter for his fourth goal of the season. Gavlas' defense partner Ty Ettinger and forward Hayden Clayton (Open Studies) were given the assist on the goal.

Moments later the Kings would take their first lead of the game. Forward Jaxon Steele (Bachelor of Kinesiology) sauced over a pass to his linemate Miller, who would drive down the boards, come across the net and backhand it into the net for the Kings third goal of the game.

Another powerplay goal for the Clippers tied it up at the eight-minute mark in the second period. A funny bounce off a Kings defenseman led to the puck right in front of an open net for the Clippers to just tap it in and tie it up.

But another defenseman would answer the call for the Kings and they would take their lead back just over a minute after the Clippers tied it. Defenseman Tyson Janzen (Open Studies) walked in from the blue line down the boards into the slot, spun around and fired a wrist shot past the opposing goaltender for his first career ACAC goal.

After a period full of penalties and powerplays, the Kings still managed to lead the Clippers 4-3.

The Clippers would score the tying goal with under 10 minutes left to play in the game after they drove hard to the net which led to a free puck in the slot for their forward to fire it into the net.

This game needed overtime as after three periods of play, both teams were tied at four.

Forward Jacob Wozney (Bachelor of Education) ended things for his team as he was on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Instead of passing it across, Wozney fired it top shelf for the game-winner.

The player of the game went to forward Jaxon Steele. He had two assists in the 5-4 win.

The Kings will have next weekend off with their next home game on Saturday, February 18 at 7 pm.
