Kings win in triple overtime and keep their season alive

Edmonton, March 11, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings were on the right side of a marathon game as they defeated the Concordia University Thunder in triple overtime to keep their season alive.

Like last night, the Thunder would open the scoring nine minutes into the first period with a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing play that ended in a goal from forward Grayson Reid (Bachelor of Science).

Under a minute into the second period, Reid would whistle a wrist shot by Kings goaltender Arik Weersink (Bachelor of Business Administration) for his second straight goal on the powerplay.

The Kings would finally answer eight minutes into the middle frame to cut their opponent's lead in half. Coming off a powerplay, Red Deer was able to maintain possession in the Thunder zone which led to a goal from forward Nolan Doell (Bachelor of Education) as he deked out the goaltender and fired a backhander into the open net.

Forward Easton Haygarth (Business Administration) would score his first goal of the season to tie it up at two. It was a fight for the puck in front of the net with bodies all around it that ultimately ended in Haygarth finding the puck and firing a shot past the Thunder goaltender.

Concordia University would regain its lead with under a minute to go in the second period. But the Kings would answer back 17 seconds later on a two-on-one odd-man rush with Doell one-timing home a pass from his teammate Jacob Kendall (Bachelor of Education) for his second goal of the game.

The Polytechnic would gain their first lead in the game as they opened the third-period scoring after defenseman Layne Toder (Management Certificate Skywing) skated into the high slot and one-timed a shot into the back of the net.

But it did not take long for the host to tie it up at four which was the end of the scoring in regulation time.

The game would need overtime with the Thunder and Kings deadlocked at four but the fourth and fifth periods would not solve anything. However, each team had multiple chances to win it but both goaltenders were coming up big for their team.

Forward Jacob Wozney (Bachelor of Education) would play hero yet again after ending this triple overtime game with a snipe in the high slot to give his team some hope as they defeat the Thunder 5-4.

The rubber match of the series will start at 4:30 pm in Red Deer at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre with the winner advancing to the finals against the NAIT Ooks as they swept the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings.
